The Benefits Of Speaking Up When You Are Down

No matter if you have mental health concerns, need to alleviate stress, or talk through your addiction problems, always know that there is someone there to help you. Whether it be a friend, a family member, a stranger, or a healthcare professional, you should find someone to confide in and trust to talk about your concerns with. If you often doubt yourself and don’t speak up when you are feeling down, low, or concerned about something, here is why you should and the benefits of opening up.

Help you recover

Whatever you are dealing with, just know that there is someone out there that can help you. Whether you feel your concern is minor or severe, there is a friend or doctor out there that will want to listen and guide you through recovery.

For instance, intensive outpatient program services can help people with mental health issues, substance abuse, or other life-threatening addiction concerns. These facilities work with people as often or as little as they need to help them through recovery.

Increase trust

Silence can reduce trust and connection with your friends or family, or whoever else is involved in the matter. You may think that staying silent keeps you from being involved in any conflict, but quite the opposite. Silence is as much an active form of communication as talking. Anytime you are involved in a situation, people are aware of all the input and lack of it. If you disapprove and don’t say anything it will not make you seem easygoing. If the problem persists and you did nothing people may consider it as enabling and think the issue is as much your fault as the person who actually caused the problem. You may destroy trust and create resentment. People rarely thank you for withholding information down the line.

You may feel there are cons of speaking up, such as revealing too much information or fear of causing an argument. Yet, there are many more pros of speaking up such as reconnecting with yourself and improving your health. Your health and wellbeing are much more important than worrying about causing a fuss. Your health is forever, whereas a silly argument can be forgotten about within a day.

Making your issue obvious

You can’t assume the obvious is obvious. Your experience and knowledge have value in a given situation. No one else has your unique perspective. That doesn’t mean that everything in your brain is worth communicating, but with a little discretion and thought, you should be able to bring value in most situations. And your piece of the puzzle may be the most important finisher. You’re also not doing yourself any favors by not sharing your expertise.

People don’t automatically recognize your skills, values, ambitions, and desires when you are quiet. If you wait around for people to notice or read your mind, you will likely end up on many paths that are not of your own choosing. You may end up with projects you don’t want, missing promotions you do, or accepting tasks you don’t have time or ability to complete. Gather up your confidence and share.

Build confidence

The more you keep in your thoughts and ideas, or issues, the more insecure you can become. You may lose all confidence to ever speak up if you keep putting it on hold. When you speak up, you show the world you have value.

Building confidence will help you speak up whenever you next feel down or have something you want to say to someone. The more you practice speaking up, the easier it will feel. This will help you alleviate stress and worries as speaking out means you can attain help quicker.

Improves relationships

You may not be alone in how you feel. You will never know that until you speak up. If you speak up about your ideas, issues, or thoughts, then you may be surprised with how many other people agree or feel the same. Your words, especially words of affirmation, will help inspire those you lead. When you share your ideas confidently, securely, and with boldness, you inspire others to do the same.

If you are concerned about anxiety, speaking up about it may help someone else open up too. This can help you improve relationships with that person and you can be each other’s shoulder to lean on and talk through things with.

Helps others understand you

When you speak up and voice your emotions, it will allow the room, your friend, or the world to understand you better. If you hide how you feel, nobody will ever know. Your body language or actions might not give away that you are feeling low, so your closest friends may not have any idea how you are feeling. The moment you speak up and voice how you are feeling, others will understand you better and most likely want to offer you help. Or, they can direct you where to get the best help.

For instance, if you are going out with your friends and you are not satisfied with their plans but you choose to go because you don’t want to hurt them, you will end up making the sacrifices always and will see yourself adjusting to their terms and conditions all because you didn’t have your say. You should suggest to them better plans or simply tell them that you don’t think you will enjoy being a part of this plan.

Reduce the low feeling

If you don’t choose to speak your mind you will always be stressed and unhappy as you will be crushing your mood and choices in the run. Keeping things to yourself and not letting them out will only trigger anxiety in you and this could be problematic in the long run and time and again, you will be left with nothing but regrets for not having tackled things differently.
