Homemade Fajita Seasoning

Making your own homemade seasonings is really simple and so much healthier for you. Store bought fajita seasonings are full of nasty chemicals you really do not want in your body. This picture is the ingredients list from an Old El Paso Fajita Seasoning packet.

el paso fajita seasoning ingredients

There are many fillers in here that are completely unnecessary and not healthy for you.

Corn Starch– is usually GMO (unless labeled organic) and highly processed.

Maltodextrin-another name for corn and highly processed. In Europe, this can be made from wheat but here in the US it is usually safe for those with a gluten allergy/celiac disease.

Monosodium Glutamate– MSG. A flavor enhancer the food industry loves to add to processed foods. It has been linked to health conditions including headaches, heart palpitations, depression, fatigue, eye damage, nausea, numbness in the face, neck or other areas of the body and burning sensations.

Partially Hydrogenated Soybean Oil-GMO and transfat. Transfats, no matter how small of the amount are incredibly dangerous for your health.

Yeast Extract-Another name for MSG.

Natural Smoke Flavor-Possible gluten contamination.

Ethoxyquin-Developed in the 1950’s by Monsanto first as a stablizer, in 1965 it became a pesticide for pineapples and pears. It is only allowed in very small amounts in processed foods as it has caused kidney damaged in rats and has been shown to be extremely toxic in dosages higher than the FDA deems safe. If you eat a lot of processed foods, you might get over the “safe” dosage.

Making fajita seasoning is SO easy. All you need is an empty glass spice jar and the individual seasonings. Then you have it on hand at all times. No questionable additives to worry about.

I am printing out this recipe and am going to try it. We eat chicken fajitas almost every week and I am happy to cut out all that crap that is hidden in my mix! Thanks Marian!
