Pitfalls Of Your Favorite Pit Sticks

Becoming a mom put me on a quest to reduce the toxic load of life for my home, cleaning, and body products. I studied the Environmental Working Group website for weeks on end looking for brands of, well, everything to try. Spent hundreds of dollars trying different products, learned how to make a lot of my own body care and cleaning products, and found some great stuff along the way.

Today I am thrilled to announce I have finally, after 7 years, found an aluminum free, paraben free, phalate free,  junk free deodorant that actually keeps me dry AND smelling good all day long. Before I tell you what it is, I’d like to dive into the reasons why it is essential you stop using aluminum, paraben, and other nasty chemical filled deodorant.

Aluminum-It Is Bad News

Aluminum is not suppose to be in our body, yet studies have found it in both healthy women and those who have breast cancer. (source) (source) This means that our bodies do in fact absorb the aluminum in antiperspirants! This is not good news.

Aluminum in the body has been linked to contributing to the development of

Of course they say nothing is conclusive and more studies are needed. However, I feel there is enough evidence to say there is need for concern.

Parabens-Even Worse News

Parabens are a preservative used in many cosmetics and beauty products. What science has shown us is that parabens act like estrogen in our bodies. Estrogen dominance contributes to many disorders and problems including:

  • Breast cancer
  • Breast tenderness
  • Cervical dysplasia
  • Cold hands and feet as a symptom of thyroid dysfunction
  • Copper excess
  • Decreased sex drive
  • Depression with anxiety or agitation
  • Dry eyes
  • Early onset of menstruation
  • Endometrial (uterine) cancer
  • Endometriosis
  • Fat gain, especially around the abdomen, hips and thighs
  • Fatigue
  • Fibrocystic breasts
  • Foggy thinking
  • Gallbladder disease
  • Hair Loss
  • Headaches
  • Hypoglycemia
  • Increased blood clotting (increasing risk of strokes)
  • Infertility
  • Irregular menstrual periods
  • Irritability
  • Insomnia
  • Magnesium deficiency
  • Memory loss
  • Mood swings
  • Osteoporosis
  • Polycystic ovaries
  • Premenopausal bone loss
  • PMS
  • Sluggish metabolism
  • Thyroid/Hormone imbalance
  • Uterine cancer
  • Uterine fibroids
  • Water retention & bloating
  • Zinc deficiency
  • And more 🙁

Avoiding them is high on my priority list for obvious reasons.

The Search For A Good Deodorant

Like I said in the intro, I’ve been on the hunt for 7 years for a deodorant that actually works. I have tried:

Tom’s of Maine-which was incredibly disappointing. I think I smelled worse using it than using nothing at all.

Salt Sticks-which worked for about a month, then did absolutely nothing.

Essential oils with coconut oil-not great but not awful. Usually smelled by the end of the day.

Native Deodorant-is gentle, smells great, and a good option for those making the switch. I found that it kept me a little less dry that I like to be (I do live in Phoenix) but it is still a good one.

Primal Pit Paste-Is one that is probably the most gentle to switch too while still working well. For me personally, it worked well on the dryness factor but I smelled musty by the end of the day. I also wasn’t fond of the wet feeling it gave me. However, many people around me swear by it.

My Personal Favorite

schmidt's deoderant

Schimdt’s Natural Deodorant– Not only do I stay dry all day long in a 115 degree day, and it smells great even after an intense (and sweaty) workout and at the end of the day. I love the texture, how easily it applies, how little I need to use, how many applications I get in a jar, and the variety of scents available. Some people have reported that it causes irritation and a rash. They have changed their formula to be more gentle. Their gentlest formula and best for newbies to aluminum free is their charcoal+magnesium one. It helps pull the aluminum build up out of your armpits while still keeping you dry.

I am so excited to share my discovery with you and strongly recommend you give them a try. The product is made in Portland, Oregon (yay USA!) and fairly new to the market. If you follow them on facebook they have some great deals like free shipping if your local health store doesn’t carry them.

Do you have a favorite natural deodorant? I would love to hear about your experience!

  1. Wow. I must say I have been curious about this, but not brave enough to go on the search. I will try what you are calling The One. My husband and I are trying to eliminate as many toxins as possible in our everyday lives. P.S. I felt the same about Tom’s…hence why the journey stopped.

I totally understand stopping the journey. I went off and on it for years. I’m super excited to have found one that has worked for over 2 months.

  2. Thanks for sharing this! I have not tried, but am looking forward to purchasing. I have also searched for a health deterrent for years and I appreciate all that you’ve shared with us to help make our choice easy!

  3. I like the Crystal roll-ons. Product Details – No Aluminum Chlorohydrate and Hypoallergenic, Fragrance and Paraben Free. I also work with Young Living and they have deodorant that works and has essential oils. I have also tried JASON’s roll on. Crystal is my favorite and we get very sweaty here in Phoenix.

Every person is different for sure. The Crystal didn’t work for me after about a month which was disappointing. I haven’t tried the young living one yet. Do you have a link? I would love to check it out.

  4. I will have to try this! I always find new deodorants that work and then stop after a while. Much like you described with the salt stick. Thanks for the recommendation!

  5. Applause for this wonderful important information. Our skin is our largest organ that absorbs all of the toxins and nutrition it comes in contact with. That is why the patches work effectively. Finding a deodorant product that does not clog our pores is important too. We have used a number of products ‘real purity & weleda citrus’. Looking forward to trying Schimdt’s Natural Deodorant.
