If you haven’t noticed yet, I thoroughly enjoy eating meat. This is a sore spot/surprise to a lot of people who are trying to be healthy. Hear me out though. I have tried every major lifestyle out there including vegetarian, vegan, raw vegan, clean eating, paleo, and traditional. For me personally, including meat and certain grains every once in awhile works very well (traditional diet). I also do a ton of studying on all opinions of nutrition, in fact my school taught me over 100 different dietary theories. I do believe it is healthy, and offers nutritional benefits plants just can’t give us enough of.

A breakdown of nutrition meat offers us that plants cannot are:

B12-It is not available in in any plants and 92% of vegans are deficient in this essential vitamin. It plays a key role in the brain and nervous system, and the formation of blood. It affects DNA synthesis, fatty acid metabolism and amino acid metabolism. (source)

Cholesterol– It is not the enemy! Cholesterol is an essential precursor for hormones (think thyroid health), making bile (essential for breaking down fats we consume), and making vitamin D from the sun. Our bodies cannot make all that we need so dietary consumption is essential. (source) Pastured animals, who are outside and eat grass, contain higher amounts of vitamin D, omega 3 fatty acids, and twice as much conjugated linoleic acid (CLA). (source)

DHA and EPA– the active forms of Omega-3 fatty acids are found primarily in animal foods and crucial for health in all stages of life, especially in pregnancy. They are anti inflammatory, essential for cognitive function, preventing cardiovascular complications, and much more. (source) ALA is the other type of Omega-3 that comes mostly from plant sources and cannot be converted it into the active forms at the levels we need to stay healthy. (source)

This is just a little bit of the nutrition meat has to offer, but let’s move onto my homemade meat seasoning.

One thing that annoys me about store bought blends, even the organic ones, is they often times add anti caking agents to them. Now in the beginning process of switching to real food, the convenience of the blends are really nice. However, as I’m always trying to stick to real foods and avoid as many additives as possible, I find myself making my own blends. You can get empty glass spice bottles from amazon (like this one"") or I’ve even found them at Big Lots for 69 cents each to make them in bulk. Or you can do what I tend to do and just add them to taste.

What I love about this all meat seasoning blend is I literally use it on pretty much every meat. I add it to burgers, season beef/bison/lamb, top on chicken before baking, and used it in salmon patties or in a grain free breading on cod. It truly is an “all purpose” seasoning blend when it comes to meat and it is so simple! All I use is a blend of garlic salt, onion powder, cumin, and black pepper. So simple, so flavorful.
